What is a unit?

One boundary geometry, one reverse lookup, one export file or one batch of up to 1,000 point checks. Search and browsing the hierarchy are free. A described area runs an AI agent and costs 50 units.

Do cached boundaries cost less?

Accepted Answer

A call costs the same whether it's served from our cache or fetched fresh from OpenStreetMap; the cache makes it fast, not free. Search is always free.

What happens when I run out?

Accepted Answer

Calls that use units answer HTTP 402 with code quota_exceeded until the 1st of next month or until you upgrade. Free calls keep working.

Question 4

Can I use it without a key?

Accepted Answer

Search, children and low-detail previews work without a key, up to 20 calls a minute per IP. Everything else needs a free key.

Can I keep the polygons?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Boundaries are OpenStreetMap data under the ODbL: store them, use them commercially, and credit “© OpenStreetMap contributors” where you display them.
